About Corey Pech
CP: I’m a 25-year-old Tiktok Creator that focuses on mental health (specifically Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder). My goal is to bring awareness to mental illness while also giving individuals an outlet to share, cope, and laugh.
Mental Health
HS: Describe your mental health experience
CP: I was 18, I think, when I was diagnosed with Bipolar Type II and at 20 I received a dual diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. As Bipolar runs in my family, I wasn’t particularly shocked, it made sense to me. However, when I was diagnosed with BPD it was the first I had ever heard of the disorder. For the majority of my life I just let my mental health ride and it was utter chaos. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I actually decided I needed to take power over myself and learn to be proactive with my mental health.
HS: If you yourself suffer from a mental illness, how do you deal with it each day? What are some of the methods that you use?
CP: I start off my days completely reset and open to positivity and purpose. I also start my days off with my medication. I’ve learned that time can be your biggest enemy but also your best friend. It’s very easy to get stuck in the moment but time passes and it’s great to see how much progress has been made when looking back. Sobriety has significantly helped my mental health as well. Alcohol will drive you mad if you let it. I find it very important to stay grounded with reality and our physical world. I do this by keeping my senses engaged and focusing on the world around me as I perceive it. I might count my fingers, smell some scented candles, spot multiple sounds that are present, etc. to keep myself in touch with reality. Breaking things down logically has also been a savior when my thoughts are high in emotion. Emotions can bring you to think very irrationally so it’s important to make sure logic is on your side and to practice using logic often.
HS: What does mental health mean to you?
CP: Mental health to me means the condition of your thoughts and mood. We can take care of our mental health by doing things that are good for our thoughts and mood, such as meditation and medication. Just like our physical health our mental health needs a lot of attention and care daily.
HS: Why are you or why do you want to be an advocate for mental health?
CP: I actually never thought I would be in the position I am in now. I posted about mental health just for laughs at first then people started reaching out and I found out that I really wanted to help all these people who had nobody else. I found out a lot of people lack the support they need and that a lot of others weren’t even aware of what different mental illnesses like BPD even entailed.
HS: How are you trying to end the stigma of mental health?
CP: It is almost taboo to talk about the darker sides of mental health. I want to bring awareness in a positive manner by taking the power away from the negative and laughing about it. We all deserve to be happy and I know it has helped me cope to take the things that have hurt me in the past and share them in a light-hearted, comedic way. By sharing my experiences I hope others, too, will have the courage to share their experiences.
HS: Why should mental health be talked about within the community?
CP: All of us have brains and all of us struggle from time to time. We need to support each other through this journey we share called life. The mystery of the mind is one that may not ever be completely solved but by sharing with each other we can learn from one another.
HS: What are other resources you use to learn more about mental health?
CP: I do a lot of research in my downtime but the biggest resource I have found of use is the DSM-V. The DSM-V is the diagnosing tool for mental illnesses and can tell you a lot about what to expect and what to look for after being diagnosed. Now the manual itself is a little costly but you can find information from it scattered around the internet. All it takes is some digging.
